Rewritten Song: Shapes (version 2)

Okay okay okay…here’s the updated and re-recorded version of the song “Shapes” that I first wrote and released this week, last year. You can read the whole spiel from last year here. And then go on to compare the two versions of songs.

Let me know how you think they’re different.

I can, maybe, tell you how I think they’re different….

First, last year’s version sounds like most of my songs from last year. Including the guitar parts and the voice I was using to sing. This new version for this year sounds almost exactly like how I sing and play a lot of other songs I’ve written this year.

Second, last year’s song was obviously about one thing that I wrote about in the post from last year, but then, maybe, had a few other more complex layers going on. This new 2011 version, though, is probably pretty much only about one thing, but it’s hard to nail that down cause the music to the song makes you just start to wiggle and move before you can listen to any of the words.

And, lastly, I think that’s a pretty silly explanation of both versions. I don’t know anything about either of them.

Okay, so that’s it for today.

Tonight, though, the Barehand Jugband is rollin into the Grafton for our monthly second-Thursday show. You can come out if you want. It’s free. There’ll be limited dance space available. I think there’re some sort of drink specials to get you wobbly. And there’ll be lots of people there talking about Folk Music. It’ll be so great. Check it out on facebook if you want more info.

The Talkin’ Headline Blues #44

Man, this doesn’t even feel like a real week, huh? I’m all jumbled up. Don’t know what day it is or where I’m standing at. What shape I’m in or where I’m going.

But, the headlines do not stop! News must always be made!

So, fear not! I have written another Talkin’ Headline Blues. Or, well, I lifted all the lines for one from cnn.com. I put them in the correct order, though. Pat me on the back for that, cause sometimes it’s tough to rhyme certain headlines that just need to be next to each other.

New Song: Good God

Wrote this new one last week on Wednesday. I was trying to go for something different than what I’ve been putting out the past few weeks. I think it started out that way, some sort of Gospel tune, but it ended up where I been.

Good thing I’m fine with that. It’s where I’m headed anyway, right?

Probably, I shoulda written some sort of Woody Guthrie-inspired Labor song for today, but I just didn’t have that in me. Not a whole lotta folks do these days. Everyone’s just working so hard to get by and by.

Rewritten song: I’m her’s and her’s only (version 2)

Here’s the re-record of the song I released this week, last year. I think this one’s a vast improvement on the original (listen here for comparison).

Not only is the music a tad better, but this song is more in my own style (whatever that may be right now…), rather than a copy of some other style.

Anyway, that’s that.

The Talkin’ Headline Blues #43

And, again, here they are, all the relevant headlines from cnn.com.

I read somewhere recently that this time of August was supposed to be a slow news cycle because Congress is out of session. So, basically that means this is the time when the media manufactures news.

That’s just what I read somewhere. But I guess that implies that the media can control the weather, right?

Anyway, the Barehand Jugband is at the Hideout tonight for our monthly show. We get going around 9pm and keep up the heat until early the next morning. Come on out, it’s only 5 dollars.

Songwriting, home recording and vinyl records from Chicago folk singer and songwriter Andrew Francis.
