Here’s the new Talkin’ Headline for this week. You’ve probably already noticed (and commented to your co-workers) that I didn’t post a new tune yet. Well, it’s coming up soon. I wrote two today already so far, and I got about 60 others up in my head. So, I would guess by Friday there’ll be a new one up and then by next Monday I’ll be back on track.
But, I’ve also got a new re-recording of last year’s tune headin down the pipeline tomorrow. So be sure to come back for that.
Also, thanks to everyone that came out on Friday night to the show I had at the Auxiliary. You did some good rump shakin. See ya at the next one.
Here’s the new song for this week. Yeah, four days late. But at least I got through it. This one’s kinda pieced together from another song I was trying to write last week. It wasn’t going anywhere. I gave it a shot on Sunday again. Rewrote a little bit, rearranged the words, mixed up the tune. Nothing worked, so I let it sit all week.
When I went back to it last night this is what I got. Rather than just skip this week, I thought I’d run with it and see where it gets me leading into next week. Maybe somewhere, maybe nowhere. At least I gave it a go, though.
So anyway. That’s that.
Remember, you can catch me tonight at the Auxiliary in Logan Square. Check out the facebook event. I’m singing starting at around 11pm. Couple other great performers are hitting the stage first, starting at 9pm. It’s gonna be a good old fashioned time. Hope to see ya there.
I did a little rework on this one. Jumbled some things up. But nothing too spectacular. I used another old Carter Family tune for the melody. This time, “I Wouldn’t Mind Dyin.” That’s another one I used to play out all the time. So it’s just kinda always in the back of my head.
Now, the previous version was pretty much a straight up blues progression. This one is too, might sound different, but it’s still blues. Just maybe a little more hillbilly blues than delta blues.
Also, I’ve got my new song all finished for this week. (Finally….) I’ll load it up tomorrow for you to enjoy over the holiday weekend. Then I gotta come right back with something else new, I guess.
Be sure you’ve marked your calendar for this Friday too. Remember that I’m playing at the Auxiliary in Logan Square. Check out the facebook event. It’s gonna be hot. Starts at 9pm.
Yeah, yeah. No new song yet this week. I’m working on it, though. Hopefully by Wednesday or Thursday I’ll have something up.
In the meantime you can listen to this new Talkin’ Headline Blues and make your plans to come see me on Friday night at the Auxiliary in Logan Square. Check out the facebook event. It’s gonna be a real good time. It’s cheap. It’s BYOB, which makes it cheaper.
Here’s the re-record of the song I wrote and released this week last year about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Go listen to the original version here. You can see that last year I used the Cater Family’s “Wildwood Flower” as the structure and melody. I found it really hard to do anything with this tune since it was such a strong melody, so I just used another Carter Family tune for this year’s re-record. This time I used “Sowin’ on the Mountain,” which is actually a combination of a few different Carter Family tunes that uses a melody that they used a lot. Ramblin’ Jack Elliott recorded a version of it that I always play. Was one of the first tunes I learned. Check it out here.
So that’s that for this one.
Also, remember that the Barehand Jugband is playing a big show tonight at Double Door. We’re opening for the Infamous Stringdusters. Gonna be a great show. Doors open at 8pm, we go on at 9pm sharp, and the Stringdusters follow at 10pm. Come see what it’s all about.
