New Song: That Was Enough

Here’s the new song for this week. Wrote this one last night. I guess you could say it’s a compilation of some stuff that I did over the weekend. But that’s not what the song is about at all. I wonder if you could come up with it’s meaning?

This one’s a pretty straight up blues progression. Nothing too fancy, although the singing is pretty intricate. You just gotta listen real close.

I didn’t know for sure if I liked this tune when I wrote it and I still think it’s a little silly and maybe even a tad sentimental, but the more I hear it the better it gets to me. Who knows….

Also, I’m playing tonight at the Fedora Lounge. The set starts at 9:30pm and I’ll be slingin’ em until around midnight. Start off your workweek right and stop on by.

Rewritten Song: Hammer ‘n’ Nail (version 2)

The tune I wrote and recorded this week, last year was “Hammer ‘n’ Nail.” You can go check out the blog post and listen to the original recording here. For the 2010 version I used the song “Ballad of John Henry” as a basis for the melody. You can hear Ramblin’ Jack Elliott do that here. I always really loved this song. Sing it all the time around the house. Just one of those old gooders that I can’t shake outta my noggin.

So, for this new version, I decided to use another old melody that I really love. This time I picked the Carter Family’s “Black Jack David.” Check it out here. It’s a great song. But it was kinda, actually, hard to fit my words in there. Not that they don’t fit, but I’m so used to singing about Black Jack David taking a fair lady across the sea and sleeping out under the moon and stars that I had a hard time singing different words. Took me three takes of recording once I started, though. So, not too bad.

Anyway, let me know what you think. And remember, I’m singing on Monday, June 20 at the Fedora Lounge. The set starts at 9:30pm and I’ll be slingin’ em until around midnight. Start off your workweek right and stop on by.

New Song: I still ain’t got a song to sing

Here’s the new song for this week. Wrote it on Monday. Don’t have too much to say about it. It’s one of those that I just kinda churned out without thinking about it because I had to get something done. It’s kind of a combination of a couple songs, now that I think about it. It’s got some of “Where have you gone?” which I re-recorded last week. And it’s got a little of “I’m only trying to say what comes to me.”

Anyway, I’m done. On to what’s next.

The Talkin’ Headline Blues #32

Yeah, okay, I know I didn’t post a new song yesterday. You’ll just have to wait until tomorrow. I had a busy week last week and I’m running with that as my excuse.

Anyway, you get another installment of the Talkin’ Headline Blues. Enjoy.

Also, I played the Logan Square Farmer’s Market on Sunday. Maybe you saw me there. Maybe you saw Mayor Rahm come stormin through right past me while I was singing “Pilgrim of Sorrow.” Maybe you’ll see me next time. I’m gonna try to be out there as much as possible. Either officially in the sanctioned tent. Or unofficially.

Songwriting, home recording and vinyl records from Chicago folk singer and songwriter Andrew Francis.
