New Song: Just Like Everything Else

I never wrote a song about a chicken before. But I’ve heard a lot of chicken songs. And I never quite knew exactly what they were about. Or understood them very much. Except that they were maybe about chicken.

But now I think I get them a little better. I think I understand chicken a little better. If you understand me at all.

So, this song is about chicken. I wrote it on Sunday night and just got around to recording it Tuesday night. It’s a pretty easy song to understand. If you know anything at all about chicken.

I’ll also post the fresh, updated, re-recorded tune from 2011 tomorrow morning, but be sure to check out a few of the other new songs and re-recordings I’ve done the past couple weeks here, here, and here.

And then go grab your coat and hat. See ya.

New Song: The sun makes everything glow

And here’s the new song for the week. Took me about an hour or so to write. Mainly cause I kept getting interrupted. But was a good kind of interrupted. Someone constantly telling me to “look, look at this!” and “look at how I colored this dog all purple!” and “I colored this girl all purple too!”

And then I could ask questions like, “So, what should this next verse be about?”

And the answer would be…”books.”

And then, “what do you like most about books?”

“Words.”

And then, “What do the words look like to you?”

“I just do not know.”

So, I had some help for this song. Thanks Gus.

But also, this song is kind of weird because it sounds a lot like songs I wrote a year and a half or 2 years ago. Not that that’s so bad, but it’s just strange. I didn’t even really think about the music, it just happened this way and fit well so I went with it.

I kind think this song is best suited for it’s re-recorded version next year. But who knows.

Anyway, that’s it.

New Song: I was raised in a holy way

Okay, here’s the new song for this week. Made it by the skin of my teeth….I think my nephew Hank’s 2nd birthday party this afternoon helped kick me into gear. All that energy woke me up.

I actually wrote this one on Thursday this week. Or, started it on Thursday morning and finished it over the next couple days. But it came pretty quick when I did take the time to write.

I like it. Kinda moves in the right way, I think. Needs more though and I’m not totally sure about the tempo. Tried it slow…tried it fast…settled on this mid-tempo version. Also, I wasn’t completely satisfied with the key I chose. But rough drafts are not the time to be picky. I’ll work on that and maybe I’ll play this one at an up-coming show.

I’m got a few of those lined up and I’m also (slowly) putting together a new website. So, watch for those things coming in the next few weeks.

Also, I’m gonna be working with Pearl Mahone & The OneEyed Jacks. First official practice is Monday. Pearls is trying out a new line-up and new(ish) style. Should be interesting.

See ya next week for another new song and a re-record of this tune from 2011 since I didn’t write a new one in 2012.

It’s So Hard Knowing

Well, here’s the new song, It’s So Hard Knowing, for this first week of the new year. Right at the end of the week too.

I had the first part of this song, the first part of the first verse, written back at the beginning of December. And…just let it sit around. Knew I liked it. Knew it worked somehow. Knew it was for something.

I’m glad I didn’t forget it cause I think this one works fairly well.

It’s about…well…I’m not totally sure what it’s about. It took me all day to write. Working. Writing. Taking a break. Returning. Leaving. Back again. I guess it’s pretty obvious what it’s about. Like, maybe…don’t assume anything about anything. But maybe not. I don’t know.

Maybe it’ll mean something to you.

Anyway, that’s that. I’ve got a few live performances churning for the coming months, so stay tuned for those, and all the songs each week.

New Song: Sitting down to say a tune

It’s been a whole lot of time since I posted a new song.

It’s been a whole lot of time since I wrote a new song.

But, I figured today was a good day to do both.

It’s my daughter’s first birthday. This song is for her. Only she would be able to understand it, I think.

To everyone else it makes no sense. It hardly makes sense to me.

So that’s that.

Happy Birthday, Della. Shake that pineapple can.
