New Song: Not me, not me

Alright, alright, here’s the new song for this week. I was working from behind again because of the out-of-town shows down in Louisville, but I got it all caught up now.

I thought I had a couple tunes to work on that I started last week, and then another one that I started in the car trip back from Kentucky, but none of those really grabbed my attention when I sat down with em on Monday night. So I started this one.

Actually, I had the idea for this in the car Monday night driving back to my house. Jotted it down quick and then worked up the first two verses, which came really fast.

The rest of the song kinda fell into place by Tuesday night, although I’m still not really sure on the layout of it. Don’t know if I totally like that there’s two repeating elements. It’s different than usual, but also it’s not. I’ll keep working on it. Maybe get some help at some point.

I think it’s an okay song at this point, though. How about you?

Also, the EP album that I released and started selling CDs of is finally available for purchase online. You can buy it from CDBaby as digital files (soon you can get CDs there to, once I get them in the mail), and from itunes in the next week or so. Go check it out.

New Song: Song #145 in F-sharp minor

Whew! I worked hard to get to this song, let me tell ya. I thought I had two all lined up and was gonna just have to record them yesterday, but when I sat down and started working on them, well, let’s just say they weren’t as good as I remembered when I wrote them.

So I had to move on.

I actually went pretty far back, 2 or 3 or 4 weeks, looking for something I could record for this week’s new song. Nothing was working, though. I tried about 4 or 5 little songs I had sketched out, and they just weren’t happening.

Then, well, I got a little inspiration, I guess, and this song popped out. It’s sort of one of those tunes about not having anything to say or write or sing about. I’ve written those before on occasion, as you may have noticed.

Anyway. That’s that for this week.

I’m guessing next week’s song is gonna be delayed again too, since I’m heading out of town tomorrow down to Louisville to play the National Jugband Jubilee, and I don’t have anything written. That and I have to rest my voice since it’s still kinda finding it’s way back. I should not have recorded three songs last night, by the way, but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. And last year I wrote two new songs in one week, so I had to re-record both those last night. You’ll get one on Thursday and then the other one on Monday. Should be enough to keep ya happy, right?

New Song: Good God

Wrote this new one last week on Wednesday. I was trying to go for something different than what I’ve been putting out the past few weeks. I think it started out that way, some sort of Gospel tune, but it ended up where I been.

Good thing I’m fine with that. It’s where I’m headed anyway, right?

Probably, I shoulda written some sort of Woody Guthrie-inspired Labor song for today, but I just didn’t have that in me. Not a whole lotta folks do these days. Everyone’s just working so hard to get by and by.

New Song: Sometimes this is how I feel

August sure is a long month, huh? Anyway, here’s the new song for this week. This one I wrote and recorded last night. It’s kinda got a country song feel to it, I think. It’s also one of those songs, where, after I started in on it, it was really easy to write. That’s not saying that it took 5 minutes, or anything like that, but the vision for the song just became clear after I wrote the first line.

Knew just where it was headed and just about how I was gonna get there.

Really though, I think it was bouncing around in my head all week. Was reading this book about taming and domesticating zebras, and found out that you just can’t get a lasso around them no matter how hard you try. Anyway, that had some effect, I think.

And then, yesterday, a line popped up into my head from Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. It’s right near the beginning, right near the start. Know it?

So that helped too. Once I started in on the song those two ideas just kept coming up.

Anyway, that’s that for today.

New Song: I Spent the Whole Morning

Wrote this one yesterday. I think it’s basically almost already a fully-formed song. Probably needs some mouth harp in there somewhere. And there’re a couple phrases that I’ll probably clean up. But I’d say this one’s ready.

What do you think?

Hey, also, did you know that I have two shows this weekend?

On Friday playing a benefit for the Building Stage. It’s called “Terror and Cowboy Songs.” Only 5 bucks to get in and it seems like it’ll be pretty crazy. Come check it out. I go on at 10pm (or soon after 10pm) and play for about an hour. The facebook invite has some more info for ya.

Then on Saturday afternoon from 2-3pm I’ll be at the Hideout as part of the Urban Folk Circuit. Swing on by and have a beer and buy some DIY wares. Here’s the facebook event with more on the market. This one is FREE.
