New Song: Start the new day

Here’s a tune I wrote on Friday last week. It’s basically a companion to my song “Goodnight Babe” from my full-length album from last August (which you better go buy soon cause I’m running low on copies). Or at least that’s what I had in mind when I wrote it. You can listen to Goodnight Babe by clicking here.

It’s not nearly as successful as Goodnight Babe, but I think that’s probably because it’s a wake up song instead of a goodnight song. There’s plenty of lullabies to fall back on for images, but not really any how-ya-doing, sun-rise-and-shinin songs. I took a little from an old Woody Guthrie tune (Wake Up), off one of his kids songs albums. But everything else is mine.

And there you have it.

New Song: Baby, give it the gun

Here’s the new song for the week (finally). I got behind, but, in addition to writing this one yesterday, I also wrote 7 or 8 other songs. They aren’t all good, but I’ve at least got a starting point for next week. So I’ll have something on Monday morning for you. Bright and early.

This song is pretty much your standard folk train song. The idea for it came from this book:

Not much else to say about it. It’s done, that’s it.

Maybe I’ll see ya out at the Folk and Roots Festival this weekend. The Barehand Jugband is playing at 3pm on Saturday. We’ll be doing our set inside in the Old Town School’s auditorium. Get yourself in there and beat that heat.

New Song: I want yours

Here’s the new song for this week. Yeah, four days late. But at least I got through it. This one’s kinda pieced together from another song I was trying to write last week. It wasn’t going anywhere. I gave it a shot on Sunday again. Rewrote a little bit, rearranged the words, mixed up the tune. Nothing worked, so I let it sit all week.

When I went back to it last night this is what I got. Rather than just skip this week, I thought I’d run with it and see where it gets me leading into next week. Maybe somewhere, maybe nowhere. At least I gave it a go, though.

So anyway. That’s that.

Remember, you can catch me tonight at the Auxiliary in Logan Square. Check out the facebook event. I’m singing starting at around 11pm. Couple other great performers are hitting the stage first, starting at 9pm. It’s gonna be a good old fashioned time. Hope to see ya there.

New Song: That Was Enough

Here’s the new song for this week. Wrote this one last night. I guess you could say it’s a compilation of some stuff that I did over the weekend. But that’s not what the song is about at all. I wonder if you could come up with it’s meaning?

This one’s a pretty straight up blues progression. Nothing too fancy, although the singing is pretty intricate. You just gotta listen real close.

I didn’t know for sure if I liked this tune when I wrote it and I still think it’s a little silly and maybe even a tad sentimental, but the more I hear it the better it gets to me. Who knows….

Also, I’m playing tonight at the Fedora Lounge. The set starts at 9:30pm and I’ll be slingin’ em until around midnight. Start off your workweek right and stop on by.

New Song: I still ain’t got a song to sing

Here’s the new song for this week. Wrote it on Monday. Don’t have too much to say about it. It’s one of those that I just kinda churned out without thinking about it because I had to get something done. It’s kind of a combination of a couple songs, now that I think about it. It’s got some of “Where have you gone?” which I re-recorded last week. And it’s got a little of “I’m only trying to say what comes to me.”

Anyway, I’m done. On to what’s next.
