New Song: I wouldn’t have to keep you on my mind

This one felt good to write. I needed to write it. Had to. Been mulling around over it for a week or two now. So I sat down last night and got to hammerin. I wouldn’t say it came out easy, but once I found a form I could work with everything slowly dropped into place.

If you’ve paid attention at all to any of my songs, you can see this one is pretty typical of the way I write a tune. It’s all about playing with repeating phrases, I guess. Not that I only do that in every song I write, but, most often, I do that in songs I end up liking the best.

This, I think, is also one of those tunes that I write and enjoy good enough and even maybe consider it to be a decent stab at something, but then later come back to it, in, say, a week or two, and really get knocked out by it. I think that’s what it is. I think.

Cause, really, I don’t have much of an idea what the song is about. It’s a little bit like “I’m Only Trying to Say What Comes to Me” in that way. Or maybe not. I probably know exactly what this is about. Probably.

So I’ll just see how it goes. I’ll have to try to out live. And I’ll have to try it at different tempos and all that, maybe.

Anyway, let me know what you think about it.

New Song: No other way forward

This new one I wrote last week. I’ve really been listening to a lot of gospel tunes lately, and while this song ain’t necessarily a straight up Gospel tune it’s definitely headed in that direction. Or inspired in that way.

But it’s also a folk tune, no doubt. It’s hard to get away from that. Doing something that’s so easy and comes so free.

And this one came pretty free and easy. Probably took about 15 minutes or so to get the basic idea and structure down. Then another 20 or so to get all the verses written. When I went to set music to it I had to switch around a few of the words and drop some, and, of course, figure out some sort of melody. That went pretty smooth.

So let me know what you think about it.

New Song: Rise Up and Heal

Here’s a new song based on a Gospel tune called “Ride On King Jesus.” You can check out a version of that song by watching this video.

Now, I’m not saying I sing it anything like that, but it’s along the same lines. Comes from the same place. Goes to the same ends. I had to add a few more differing verses, though, cause I don’t have 20 people behind and around and above me all shoutin out loud. It came together pretty well, though. I’ll be playing this one out for sure.

In fact, I’ll be playing out this Friday (2/4) at Cafe Mustache. Got a show with Al Scorch and his big old banjo. It’ll be a great night. Starts at 7:30pm. Goes till 10:30 or so.

See ya there.

New Song: Without You (To Lean On)

Sat down last night to churn out a new tune and I just got stumped. That’s what happens when you don’t hit it very hard during the week. Luckily, though, because I write so much I can just flip back through my notebook and find something I started and never really finished or worked on. I wrote this one back on January 12, or, at least started to write it. I finished it off last night by adding a couple verses and changing some of the original words.

It’s still missing something, I think. A chorus to maybe tie it all together somehow. Feels like it needs a chorus. Like it builds to something and just keeps on building up and up to nowhere. Towers that get too tall always come crashing down, eventually.

So, anyway. There’s the new song for today. Got any ideas for a chorus? Send em my way.
