New Song: This Truck Ain’t Doin’ No Cookin’

image

Okay, well, here’s the new song for this week. Got it done at the very last minute, last night. It’s not a totally new song cause I been thinking about it for a while and cause it’s inspired by the Woody Guthrie song, This Train Is Bound For Glory.

I’ve been trying to write this one, or at least thinking about what I’d do for it for some time. It’s a commission (of sorts) by a friend who owns and operates the La Adelita food truck in Chicago. He thought it’d be great to do a song about all the crazy rules and regulations and laws heaped up on the shoulders of all the new trucks popping up around the city.

I wasn’t quite sure about writing a song like that. Mainly cause I haven’t done a song like that in a long time. If it was 3 or 4 years ago I probably coulda written it the day I got asked. And probably woulda done it in the talkin’ blues style like I was asked. But I’m just not as practiced at that anymore. (The Talkin’ Headline Blues are a whole other thing since I don’t really actually write any of those. I just organize them.)

Anyway. I didn’t have a song for this week and I had come up with the idea of a food truck song based around This Train Is Bound For Glory on Monday or Tuesday this week. So I sat down and tried to hammer it out.

I think it turned out okay. It’s definitely not done yet. This is a total draft. I didn’t even use microphones, just sang and played straight into my computer mic (so, sorry for the low quality).

Also, after I recorded it I changed the “This truck is bound for glory” verse. It now goes like this (I was too tired to try and re-record it, plus I think this recording gets across the right tempo and feel that I want for the song):

This truck is bound for Glory, this truck
This truck is bound for Glory, this truck
This truck is bound for Glory
Only carries what’s done wholey (holy)
This truck is bound for Glory, this truck

This works better in the rhythm of the song, I think. Do you understand this verse? The parenthetical is there to lead you on, it’s not meant to be sung.

Okay, well, I think that’s it. There also has been talk of a video that may eventually be associated with this song. I’ve got an idea about that, but I’m not willing to share it. You’ll have to wait and see.

Keep on truckin’….

New Song: It’s So Dark Outside When It’s Night-time

And, here’s the new one for this week. Written completely last night in a rush to beat the 12-oh-clock dong dong dong. I really didn’t know how it turned out. Barely listened to it.

When I heard it again this morning, though, I thought…”Not bad.”

A good enough effort, I think. It sounds a little like a song I woulda written a few months back, but that’s okay. I feel I’m at some sort of crossroads right now. Just hanging around til the deal goes down. Or hangin on, maybe.

Anyway, the cool winter air is shiftin in and my bones is beginning to feel that deep down to the core.

Last year I had an intense change in my song writing around this time, but it didn’t totally manifest, I think, until about maybe this past May or June. So I guess I got time to work into whatever I’m working into. Might come quick, might come slow. Who knows.

I do know, though, that you HAVE to come to the big record release show this Sunday, 11/20 at the Whistler. It’s gonna be HOT HOT HOT. Playing as part of Lawrence Peters’ Country Throw-down, but also using the night to start selling the new EP out now. You’ll be able to get your very own copy (for only 5 bucks!!!) with a one-of-a-kind Polaroid picture as cover art! Plus, if you want, you can take your own Polaroid (for a minimal charge) for very personal cover art. Fantastic!

See you there.

New Song: The 5-5-Oh!

Sometimes a song just materializes in front of you. A complete idea. All the words. All the images. The way it should sound.

I’m not sure this new one was like that, but maybe it was.

I had an idea for something like this song on Tuesday and then got a Million Dollars worth of help to flesh it out. So, by the time I sat down late last night to write it, I really didn’t have to do much. The second I started the whole song appeared.

It’s a fairly straight forward tune, I think. The story’s all there. The notes are all sung and played.

So that’s that for today.

Remember, this Sunday I’m playing a show at Beat Kitchen. Come on out. It’s a quick set and I’ll be doing mostly all new tunes. Maybe even this one.

New Song: One of these days

Now, don’t get mad. I may have already written this song. I don’t mean to say that it’s an old one cause I wrote all the words last night, put them to some music, and recorded it, but I have this feeling that I already wrote one with the exact same chorus. Maybe even the same title.

I don’t remember, though. Do you?

Anyway. I got the idea for this one late last night. After I wrote the first verse (about rockets) it was pretty easy to see where to pull the other verses from. It’s kind of another song about opposites, I think. But not exactly. More like being unable to find something, or get something right when you want or need it most. But knowing that if it’s true enough, it’ll turn out for you in the end.

Or maybe that’s not it at all. I like it either way.

New Song: Blues Dream #336 (version 2)

So, here’s the other version that I recorded, the first verison, of the new song that I posted for this week. I guess it’s strange, then, to call it “version 2,” but who’s keeping tabs anyway.

You can see, if you compare this to the one I released Monday (listen here), that this is slower. Well, not, necessarily the tempo. But something about it is slower. Or something. Get it?

It’s a lot more in line with other stuff I’ve recorded this year. The version from Monday was more of a stretch, both for me to sing and keep together. You can hear it in my voice. But I think that’s where I’m headed. I think I started heading in a new direction last year at about this time. A new sound.

I guess it’s something in the changing weather. Something bubbling in my blood.

But, either way you get two version of this song this week. That’s a special treat. Just in time for Halloween. Hope what you got to change into is good.
