Here’s all the news from yesterday. All the most important news that CNN felt fit to appear on it’s main web page.
Also, the Barehand Jugband is starting it’s last-Tuesday-of-the-month residency at the Hideout tonight. It’s only five bucks. We’re gonna get hot and sticky layin it down in the front room.
This one felt good to write. I needed to write it. Had to. Been mulling around over it for a week or two now. So I sat down last night and got to hammerin. I wouldn’t say it came out easy, but once I found a form I could work with everything slowly dropped into place.
If you’ve paid attention at all to any of my songs, you can see this one is pretty typical of the way I write a tune. It’s all about playing with repeating phrases, I guess. Not that I only do that in every song I write, but, most often, I do that in songs I end up liking the best.
This, I think, is also one of those tunes that I write and enjoy good enough and even maybe consider it to be a decent stab at something, but then later come back to it, in, say, a week or two, and really get knocked out by it. I think that’s what it is. I think.
Cause, really, I don’t have much of an idea what the song is about. It’s a little bit like “I’m Only Trying to Say What Comes to Me” in that way. Or maybe not. I probably know exactly what this is about. Probably.
So I’ll just see how it goes. I’ll have to try to out live. And I’ll have to try it at different tempos and all that, maybe.
Here’s another song that made it onto my full-length album from last Summer. I wrote it walking down Logan Boulevard after a few beers in the middle of the day on President’s Day. When I went to record the original (which you can listen to here) I think I had a tough time with the music. Nothing seemed to fit.
This new version, though, fits pretty well into the music. It came together really easy even though I had to write an extra verse and re-write a few of the lines. Definitely a complete re-vamp for this one.
So let me know what you think. I’ll probably start playing this version out at shows, cause I always liked the song, but never really the arrangement of the original.
Also, the Barehand Jugband has a show tomorrow at Quenchers. Come out and see us for the first time back in Chicago after our big win at the National Jug Band Battle up in Minneapolis. It’s only 5 bucks. We go on at 11pm sharp.
Here’s the make-up for missing the Talkin’ Tuesday writeup yesterday. All these headlines are from cnn.com on Tuesday.
I actually played Talkin’ Headline #13 out at the show I had at Cafe Mustache on February 4. I think it went over pretty well. The whole show was pretty good too. Al Scorch moanin and shoutin, I rambled through some tunes. I’ll probably put together another night there coming up in a couple months, so watch out for that.
This new one I wrote last week. I’ve really been listening to a lot of gospel tunes lately, and while this song ain’t necessarily a straight up Gospel tune it’s definitely headed in that direction. Or inspired in that way.
But it’s also a folk tune, no doubt. It’s hard to get away from that. Doing something that’s so easy and comes so free.
And this one came pretty free and easy. Probably took about 15 minutes or so to get the basic idea and structure down. Then another 20 or so to get all the verses written. When I went to set music to it I had to switch around a few of the words and drop some, and, of course, figure out some sort of melody. That went pretty smooth.
