Rewritten Song: Skeptical of You (version 2)

Okay, well, after a long delay of doing re-recorded songs from the previous year, I’m at it again. Go have a listen to the original version here and you can figure out what’s going on.

Or…I can just tell you.

This new version is kinda more like a folk song. Although, all my songs are kinda like folk songs. But with this one it’s easy to recognize. I’m not sure why I did it like that. I think maybe I’m a little bored of the bluesy playing and singing style I’ve been using for the past year or so.

Or maybe I was just under the gun to get this done before the end of the day. Either way…here it is.

For me, this new version is way more interesting than the original. Probably because it was really hard for me to keep time on the guitar, sing the words slightly jumbled up from how the original lyrics were written out on the page, and play in this style, which I haven’t played in for a while.

Anyway…that’s that.

But, this is this. Lot’s of bigtime Poor Elvis shows coming up. Two tomorrow (10/13): first at Lacuna Artist Loft Studios for a pop-up gallery. You don’t want to miss that. Goes from 12pm to 6pm and we’ll be playing 2 acoustic sets throughout the day. More info here.

Also on Saturday, we’re playing another set in the Traveling Truck Show. That starts at 5pm sharp. Check out the info here. It’s super great!

Then, on Sunday from 2pm-6pm we’re doing an in-store performance at Saki Records in Logan Square. We play first, probably around 2 or 2:30, so come on out. There’s info here about this one. Notice, that at both the Saki show and the Lacuna show, Powell Brew House will be pouring FREE beer samples the entire time. Yeah!

Finally, on Wednesday, October 17, we’re playing a big show at Subterranean with He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister and Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles. You can find more info on that here, or get tickets here. It’s gonna sell out soon, so hurry up. The two groups we’re playing with a spectacular.

And…that’s it.

Rewritten Song: I’m Better Off (version 2)

So, here’s the re-recorded version of “I’m Better Off,” which I wrote and released exactly one year ago today.

The new one is what it is. The old one’s here, if you want to compare.

Be on the alert! There’s a Poor Elvis show this Friday. The details are here. Check it out!

Rewritten Song: Cause, Mama (version 2)

Well, here’s the re-recorded tune that I released this week, last year. Was actually on this date, last year. Go check out the original version and then compare and contrast.

You’ll see I didn’t change any of the words. Just how the song sounds. The cadence, the style, the meter. It’s a waltz now. I particularly enjoyed the mouth harp on this new one.

So this song is a year old. There you have it.

Now, Poor Elvis has a show tonight at the Orbit Room. Why not come check it out. You’ll probably hear my new tune “Mother Mary” (although, a little different than the version I recorded it for Monday).

It’s gonna be a good show. It’s outside on the back deck. Doesn’t get any better than that.

Here’s some more info. Starts at 8pm. See ya there.

Rewritten Song: Baby, Work It All Night For Me (version 2)

So, here’s where I start doing re-recorded songs again. This is the one I wrote and recorded this week, last year. You can listen to and read about the original here, which was inspired by a Blind Boy Fuller tune.

This new version is kind of a melodramatic, overly-sentimental version of the song. It’s sung in 3/4 time. It’s nothing special. I just needed to get it done as a starting point, that’s all.

Song Post: The Sinking of the Deepwater Horizon

In honor of the 2nd anniversary of the Great BP Oil Slick of 2010, here’s a version of my song “The Sinking of the Deepwater Horizon.”

This one is a rewrite that I posted last year. You can read the description of it here. Or go listen to the original version and read about it here.

Also, did you catch me doing a special Talkin’ Headline Blues on WBEZ this morning? No? Well, you can listen and read about the radio spot here. There’s also a video of the entire song.

I’ll record and post the live radio version on Monday next week. It’s number 77, for those keeping count.

And, please don’t forget to go check out the Poor Elvis Kickstarter project. We could really use your support getting our new 7-inch vinyl record pressed and taken out on tour in June. You get some fantastic rewards for donating.

Thanks for listening and helping us make some music!
