New Song: Go when you need to go

Well, I wrote this song last night. Had a different one that I’d written on Sunday night, but it wasn’t the kind of song I like. Was an angry and spiteful one. I don’t think those kind of songs are ever very good. Those kind, or the kind that poke fun at people that aren’t like you.

So, anyway, I scrapped that one and kinda used some pieces from it to write this one. I think it works fairly well. And probably gets the feeling across that I was trying for in the other one, without being melodramatic or hurtful.

This one, though, was incredibly hard to record. I think I started and stopped about 600 times. There’s something about the rhythm of the music and the way the words match up to it that’s both interesting to me and very hard to sing. Maybe that’s why it’s interesting.

I finally got it, for the most part. So enjoy.

Also, remember that I have a show this Friday (12/16) at the Auxiliary in Logan Square. End Times Spasm Band is gonna be there and you do NOT want to miss them. They’re from Fort Wayne, Indiana, and this is their first Chicago show. So you could be the first person in this city to ever see them. How bout that! It’s only 5 dollars at the door. Plus the Auxiliary is BYOB. Doors open at 8pm and the show starts at 9pm.

Check out the details at the facebook event. Gonna be a hot one!

The Talkin’ Headline Blues #58

Woah…woah! I’ve done 58 of these things? Geez…

At this point, I wonder if anyone at cnn.com knows what I’m doing? Sometimes these talkin’ blues tunes are a little too easy to write, I think. Like maybe someone over there is throwing me a bone by including so many rhyming words in the headlines.

But, really, I don’t think that.

The show on the 16th also gonna be pretty great too. End Times Spasm Band is gonna be there and you do NOT want to miss them. They’re from Fort Wayne, Indiana, so they don’t play in Chicago a lot. Get out to see ‘em. It’s only 5 dollars at the door. Plus the Auxiliary is BYOB.

New Song: Honey, hear me true

Well, here’s the new song I’ve been working on since Sunday. You’d think in that time I woulda been able to finish it, but I think this one’s still got a ways to go.

The chorus part (that starts off the song) I think is pretty much all done, I just couldn’t figure out the music for the other parts, though. What I ended up with at this point works, I guess, but doesn’t really come across the way I had it up in my head.

I really wanted to have some sort of bridge part in this, but I’m not used to writing like that. My songs usually are more repeating chorus line type jobs. I’ll keep working on it, though. Who knows what’ll happen.

So that’s it for the week.

Mark your calendars, though, for next Friday, 12/16. I have a show at the Auxiliary in Logan Square. Check out the details at the facebook event. Gonna be a hot show!

The Talkin’ Headline Blues #57

This is the collection of headlines for this week. It’s a rock-em-sock-em version. Or something.

I’m also still working n the new song. I think I have all the words, but still no music. I had an iTunes gift card laying around so I used it to buy a few new albums to help get things rolling along. I purchased Rare Wild Rock, volumes 1, 2, 3, and 13. Best 19 dollars I ever spent. The sound quality is not great (someone must have recorded them off 45s with a cheap mic and then added a whole bunch of reverb effects), but you can still hear the songs and get the feel. My head’s already whirring from listening this morning.

So, hopefully, by Wednesday I’ll have this new tune all finished up.

Rewritten Song: All I want (version 2)

Last year I guess I was feeling some Holiday Spirit and went and wrote a Christmas song. This re-record isn’t too different (you can listen to the original for comparison here), but I think, maybe the sentiment is.

You’ll notice I mixed up the repeating element a bit, as well as a few words and lines here and there. This doesn’t change who I’m singing it too, though.

Anyway, that’s it.

I think I’ve got a new song for this week too. I just couldn’t quite get the music totally worked out last night. All (or most) of the words are done, I think. Just need to find some way to get them across. So look for that probably Wednesday this week.
